I broke my femur in January and I'm still healing. I've never broken a major bone before so I had no idea how much it could suck. I got a vertical fracture form my knee to about 2/3 up my thigh. It didn't break the skin. The bone was still in one piece, just with a very big crack in it. I couldn't walk for 6 weeks. I can walk now but I can only walk for about 2 hours at a time or 4 hours in a day without experiencing quite a bit of pain. The majority of the pain is in my knee. The bone still hurts occasionally for no apparent reason. If I over do it one day, it doesn't feel like working the next day and I've got to spend most of the day resting it. I can't run. I can't jump. I can't carry heavy things.
That being said... I've spent the last 10 years or so working in restaurants. Restaurant work is very physically demanding. The entire shift, is spent on your feet and usually running (nearly). Most restaurants also have concrete floors. There are a lot of tasks that involve lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50lbs (ice buckets, stacks of plates, cases of beverages, etc.).
Since the condition of my leg won't let me do this type of work currently, I'm seeking other types of employment. I've never worked in an office before, but I'm going to! I've applied for about 20 admin or customer service jobs in the last 2 weeks. I've landed a few interviews and I'm keeping a positive attitude. The fact is, I'm grossly under qualified. I've also filed for unemployment and I'm doing everything I can to find other sources of income...
The reason for todays blog is to get me warmed up for a typing test. It took me 20 minutes to type this. So, we'll se how I do on the test... wish me luck!

Well, here I am again. Single, bored and lonely on a Saturday night. Fortunately, this time i'm not going to get drunk and act stupid. I'll still have enough money in the bank to pay all my bills tomorrow. I really do wish I had something to do though. I'll probably end up staying bored :/ not too excited about that. Dancing would be fun. Or maybe even just a movie at some friends. Nobody's calling me back though. It's really pretty lame. I know when I was drinking they'd be back to me in a hearbeat. Life was never boring. I'm not missing the drinking, just the popularity. I guess i'm better of though. If people are that shallow, who needs it. (i was that shallow) so... Here I am, surfing the web aimlessly. If you read this, and you want to rescue me from my boredom, give me a call :) if not, i'll be alright. I've got a big box of movies to pick from and maybe i'll even do some yoga.

and just a little note for clarification; I'm a little bored, but I am not sad, angry, or in any way upset. I've actually been having a nice productive day. I'm just running out of things to do at home!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-41656783500206116892008-08-06T11:21:00.000-07:002008-08-06T11:49:28.643-07:00The Phoneneat thing... a phone can still be completely functional after spending two days at the bottom of Lake Washington. another neat thing... there's a cool guy named Mitch who runs a business called Lake Washington Braille Divers, and regularly dives to find lost valuables and return them to their owners. not so neat thing... I didn't know about this guy.

A week ago Friday, I was out visiting some friends on a boat, and I fell off the dock. I lost my shoes, ruined a bunch of stuff in my purse, but worst of all my phone came out of my purse and took a nap at the bottom of the lake. The phone lit up and I tried to swim after it, but being under water after midnight is a little disorienting and the phone got away. The next day I figured out how to get a replacement phone, and spent a week without a phone.

The phone cost me $230 new so I figured it would be a good idea to get insurance on it. The people explained to me that they might send me a reconditioned phone. This is a phone that has never belonged to anyone or been broken, but has spent a month or two on a store display. They take these phones apart, clean them and put them back together. Enough of the boring stuff. They did a terrible job! Not all of the buttons work, the screen has a grey spot, the slide action to expose the keyboard is loose, and the thing goes on mute whenever it wants and there's nothing I can do but call back to have people here me!

I've ordered another replacement phone. They said it would be here Monday, then changed the story to it would be processed Monday and get here Thursday or Friday. Meanwhile, I'm paying for services I cant use!

The bright side, my phone that went to the bottom of the lake was recovered by Mitch (mentioned before). It's completely functional, and although I can't ever activate it again per insurance rules, I have all of my contact numbers and media that I've saved in the last year and a half! It's also been very enlightening to find out who will contact me if I loose all my numbers. As sad as it was, it was also liberating to not have a phone for a week.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-78838711670682982172008-02-06T16:33:00.000-08:002008-02-06T17:06:05.021-08:00cut it again :)It's growing really fast so I won't make you wait to see it for yourself. So, here's somepictures. I'm not sure what came over me, but I decided I to try it really short again. I made about 5 dozen peanut blossoms, 12 dozen mini chocolate chip cookies, 4 dozen snowballs, 8 dozen chocolate covered mint patties (and one disastrous batch of mint taffy that had a good funeral in the trash can). I still have the box to send to mom, but other than that I gave away 11 boxes and two small bags of these delicious little confections. I also still had about 2 dozen left here but thankfully my roommate and boyfriend are making quick work of them. It took me a couple days to recover from all the baking, shopping, wrapping and sleepless angst. My kitchen was a disaster, my goodies from Christmas were all over my apartment, and my room was a mess of dirty laundry... It's all clean and back in order now! woo-hoo and I still have a couple dozen cookies left :) (plus the ones that arrived from mom as soon as all mine were packed to go) :)

I don't know what I'm going to do after new years, when all the hustle and bustle is over with. I'll have to find something to fill up the days with. Maybe I'll take the offer for the free martial arts class... I could certainly use the exercise after the cookies... and huge delicious dinners... and other stuff that makes pants too small.

Someone with a lot of persuasive powers suggested that I keep fresh cookies around all the time, which would work actually cause after a couple weeks of always having sweets around I don't like them anymore.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-38988433012611198122007-12-20T15:27:00.001-08:002007-12-20T15:41:26.000-08:00wrapping paper driveChristmas is sneaking up on me! Really. I have... two Christmas presents. I don't know what to get anyone, and I have about a dozen people I feel like getting something for. I know, there are some people who say 'I don't want anything' but too bad. I feel like giving you something for Christmas anyway. There's only a few days left. Wrapping paper is going to be really interesting, cause I don't have any and I don't feel like buying it. But they have to be wrapped, you know? I did everything I could to not worry about it while I was on vacation, especially since there was nothing I could do about it. It did bother me quite a bit though, and slowed me down for a couple days. I suppose I wouldn't have met the same people or taken the same route while I was there but I might have made it a little further north. I put so much time into planning for this trip, and making sure everything would be good and taken care of until I got back, and the one person who I was depending on fucked me over. Thanks Andrea. (and that's all I'm going to say about that to save a little face for her) I'll find a new roommate and not hold her responsible for the year lease that she signed.

While I was gone, my employment situation also changed. I came back to find a new GM was in charge at my restaurant. When I left I was under the impression that my job would still be here when I got back, but the new GM had different plans. When I went in to get back on the schedule she informed me that I wouldn't be working there anymore. I really think she did it just to make and example. I worked at Manzana for over a year and only had three write ups. Regardless, I had to find a new job too.

So everything has changed since I got back. I got rid of all the rubbish that was left in the spare room. I found a new roommate who's moving in on 12/1. He seems like a cool respectful guy, and he's 26 so he's probably got a better sense of responsibility.

I started working at Yama, a Japanese Fusion restaurant in Bellevue. I'm not serving tables yet but when I start I'll be making about the same amount as I was at the last place. I really like the fact that they're not corporate too. I don't think I'll have to worry about the management changing always changing. My co-workers are cool and the place is a little laid back for how professional we look.

Things are falling back into place quite nicely.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-78749873586171003252007-10-25T11:39:00.000-07:002007-11-01T16:50:41.777-07:00homeI' flying home today, In San Francisco right now. I'm sad to leave Australia so soon. I could spend an entire year there. I'll be home tonight if anyone wants to go out. Give me a call :)

The day I left was so sad. I had to do a lot of traveling to get home. I got on the bus from Arlie at 6am, so I could catch a ferry to Hamilton Island at 7am. Then, I flew from Hamilton Island to Sydney, transferred to San Fransisco, transferred to Seattle, then caught a bus from Seattle to my home. The whole process took about 32 hours.

I slept for most of the 13 hour flight from Sydney, and when I got to San Fransisco all I could think about was how I wished I was still in Australia. I've got all sorts of little trinkets to remember little stops along the way, and my name is still tanned on my foot from the first day on the Whitsunday sail trip. I really must have been lacking some judgement to get on that plane and come home.

I hope all of the friends I made on the trip will keep in touch and keep me posted on their travels.

I've already started planning for my next adventure. I might go to Australia again but really I'm not sure where I'll go to this time. I know one thing though, I'll certainly go for much longer.

Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-20390525593646867972007-10-24T13:03:00.000-07:002007-10-31T14:23:22.661-07:00Whitsundays

After Fraser Island, Todd, Farrell (the Canadians), Jasper (guy from Holland) and I all piled into the van again to continue on to Arlie Beach. Jasper only rode as far as Bundaberg.

We arrived in Arlie late Friday night and checking into a room at the Hostel was hell. I finally got settled in and went to bed around 2am. The next day I checked into a better room at the hostel and spent the next couple days just bumming around town.

The Whitsundays sail trip left on Monday morning. There were 26 passengers and 5 crew on the boat. The cook wrote every ones name on their foot so we could all get acquainted. We spent 3 days sailing around the Whitsunday Islands, snorkeling and scuba diving.

We set anchor at Whitehaven beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and took an introductory scuba course from the on board instructor there. That night everybody got drunk off goon (cheap box wine) and a few of the crew and passengers went ashore to do fire dancing. I tried it for the first time, and even thought I probably looked like a complete idiot, it was a lot of fun. It was really easy to go to sleep that night.

The next day we set sail again and headed on to another Island where there was a lot of reef action. I got tons of pictures here. We did another scuba dive, and spent most of the day snorkeling. That afternoon we went to a smaller Island and stayed for the sunset. There was a sand bar that stretched out quite a way, and there were stingrays swimming about in the warm shallow water. We all got drunk and slept on the boat again. A lot of the passengers were up till 2 or 3am, and I think I was probably one of the first awake the next day.

We spent the last day on the same Island and did more snorkeling. As the tide was going out, we all walked out on the sand bar. I touched a sea turtle that was close to the shore of the sand bar. We had lunch, and then motored over to another small Island where we went for one last dive. It was really active here, with several different types of coral and fish. There was no wind that day so we had to motor all the way back to Arlie.

When we got to Arlie, I was exhausted but also excited to go out with everyone that night. I got showered and made my final travel plans, then met up with everyone for drinks. The night was never ending. Around midnight a lot of the people who went out were off to catch a bus on to their next destination. I ran into a bunch of the people I had met on the Fraser Island trip. I told them I was leaving the next day and they told me I shouldn't go to sleep. I stayed up all night dancing, until 5:30 when I decided it would be a good idea to get my stuff and catch my bus. I really didn't want to go.

Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-49971258917713476872007-10-19T19:45:00.001-07:002007-10-31T14:22:49.221-07:00Fraser Island
Fraser Island was Awesome! I went on a self drive with 10 other people, and we drove all over the island. The whole Island is made out of sand, with beautiful lakes all over. I've had so much fun but my Internet time is short today so I'll have to update more later.

Another 15 minutes on the Internet...

The people I went on the trip with were all really cool, and from all over the world. We spent a lot of the trip driving on the beach, where we saw whales, a dingo, and a really huge eagle. There were all sorts of birds and lizards all over the Island, but I didn't get pictures of many of them because they are all so fast.

Camping was fun, I stayed in the tent with the Canadians one night, and this extremely tall guy from Holland the next night. The tents were pretty small so everyone had to share their space with people they had never met before (and the team was mostly guys). The wind on the beach made it hard to sleep but with enough wine there weren't to many complaints in the morning.

On our second day there we went to Indian head, which was a huge rock face where you could see most of the Island and a whole lot of ocean. It was supposed to be a cool place to watch whales and sharks from but they were all pretty far off in the distance. We walked from there to a place called Champagne pools, named for the way the waves crashed over the rocks and cause bubbly action in the water. It was a really hot spot and everyone that was on drives with different teams met up there. I got to see people that I had met in Byron there.

The last day there we drove out to a lake that is slowly disappearing into a sand dune. It was so pretty, the beach stretched on for about a mile up the dune. We only looked at this one for a minute before continuing on to Lake Mackenzie; the purest water in all of Australia. The sand was perfectly white. Even though it was cold that day everyone went swimming. We were only able to spend a couple hours there before heading back to the Barge.

I could have spent an entire week exploring the Island, and all of it's little lakes.

Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-18777571347266345272007-10-12T17:36:00.000-07:002007-10-31T14:22:03.873-07:00Byron Bay
I got into Sydney on Thursday the 4th and spent the whole day exploring the city. It seems like a pretty small place, but it's full of huge parks. There's a botanical garden that I spent a couple hours in. Then I found a shopping district downtown and got lost for a few hours. There are lots of fountains and statues everywhere too. The outskirts and suburbs remind me of New Orleans. The culture here is completely different though, everybody seems much more relaxed. It's pretty hot out most of the time too, and people here say it's not really all that hot yet.

After spending a couple days wandering around Sydney I went to Manly on a ferry. It was a pretty nice ride as the sun was setting. I partied with the locals that night, and spent most of the next day on the beach. At about 3 in the afternoon, a huge black cloud blew in and lightning and thunder were soon to follow. Within about 15 minutes everyone was off the beach and walking around under the awnings and hiding from the rain. I got the next ferry back to Sydney and spent the rest of the day inside at my friends house. One more night in Sydney and I was off to Byron Bay.

Byron is beautiful. I haven't gone up to the light house yet because my feet are pretty tired from all the walking I did in San Fran and Sydney, but I'll probably do that today.

The hostel is a lot of fun. There are people from all over the world. People are always ready to go on an adventure somewhere. I went out to a swamp the other day, but it was getting dark so I didn't get really spectacular pictures. I also walked down the beach one day and climbed all over the rocks to look at the little pools full of life. There were tons of snails and crabs. I got a few neat seashells to bring home. The crabs look a little different here. I haven't seen any whales yet but I've heard you can see them jump from the lighthouse.

Sunday I leave for Fraser Island, for a two night three day adventure. After that I'll be heading to Arlie and catching a sailboat out to Whitsundays for the day. I'm also planning a trip to Blue Pearl Bay for snorkeling. Then I'll only have a few days left before I've got to catch my flight back.

Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-62286762942939171582007-10-02T17:26:00.000-07:002007-10-02T17:32:00.687-07:00San FransiscoI didn't look very closely at my flight plans before purchasing the ticket and now I'm spending 7 hours wandering San Fransisco. I forgot my sunglasses, and managed to find some cute new ones for $5 at Fishermans warf. I also had lunch, a deli wrap but it lied about having creamcheese in it on the wraper. Now it's time to walk back to bart. I think its about 2 miles. I should be nice and tired for my flight tonight.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7504142369001650291.post-31727382013697555142007-09-19T09:07:00.000-07:002007-09-19T09:15:20.732-07:00acorn squash and spaghetti.acorn squash and spaghetti. I'm eating acorn squash and spaghetti for breakfast because I don't usually eat breakfast but it's 9am and I'm hungry. This is probably the most ridiculous blog I will ever write but... I had to write something. My life is much more interesting than what I'm having for breakfast. It's just to early to talk about it today.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16394852301458502125noreply@blogger.com0
